2014-15 Orientation: New Generation China Scholars

With generous support from the Ford Foundation, the University of Chicago Center in Beijing has been able to launch a series of programs over three years, from 2012 through 2015, entitled “New Generation China Scholars”, in which graduate students in the social sciences participate in the initiative to foster intellectual interactions among early career scholars from the U.S. and China.

Candidates have the opportunity to work on research projects at the Center in Beijing, under the guidance of faculty mentors and in collaboration with fellow graduate researchers. Each program begins with an Orientation and concludes with a Capstone Colloquium, both of which include presentations by leading experts, discussions with other program participants, and meetings with faculty mentors and experts in the business, academic and government communities in Beijing. Each participant will produce a working paper for publication on the Center website and in a joint volume.

Following the success of the first two programs, held in 2012-13 and in 2013-14, the current 2014-2015 program, the last one in the series, continues the focus on innovative approaches to the study of public goods and governance in China. The nineteen students, of whom nine are from U.S. universities and another ten are from Chinese universities, were chosen from a group of social sciences graduate students who responded to a September, 2014 call for proposals. The program started with the Orientation Seminar from December 10 through 13, and will be completed at a Capstone Colloquium in May or June 2015. Professor William Parish, Emeritus Professor of Sociology and Professor Dali Yang, Professor of Political Science, both from the University of Chicago, continue to head the program as Faculty Mentors.

During the 4-day orientation seminar, the students met with top scholars in the field as well as with agencies engaging in China’s social and economic development.  Students presented their research for comments and questions from their fellow students and the faculty mentors.
