Where:

20th floor, Culture Plaza
No. 59A Zhong Guan Cun Street

Description:

This workshop examined the philosophy of Moses Maimonides (1138-1204; b. Cordoba, Andalusia, d. Fustat Egypt) and his Guide of the Perplexed, the greatest philosophical text in the history of Jewish philosophy and thought and one of the major philosophical works of the Middle Ages in three faiths.  The possibilities for further collaborations between the Chicago Center for Jewish Studies and the two centers for Jewish Studies at Shandong and Nanjing were also explored.

In addition, Josef Stern spoke at Shandong University in Jinan on Maimonides’s philosophy toward “The Unbinding of Isaac”.  The workshop and Jinan discussion were part of the programming for the American Culture Exchange Center, a joint project between the University of Chicago and Shandong University, funded, in part, by the American Center for Educational Exchange.

Organizers: Josef Stern (Department of Philosophy and Director, Chicago Center for Jewish Studies), in collaboration with Professor Youde Fu, Director of the Center for Judaic and Inter-religious Studies at Shandong University, and with Professor Lihong Song who, together with Professor Xu Xin, directs the Glazer Institute for Jewish Studies at Nanjing University.
