International Immersion Program Brings Law Students to Beijing

Through December 23, 2012

Begins
Dec. 17

On December 17, 2012, a group of 11 students at the University of Chicago Law School arrived in Beijing for a weeklong International Immersion Program focused on international and Chinese law. The students, members of several Law School cohorts, raised funds for the winter break trip during the autumn and explored the Chinese law and business spheres in pre-program seminars.

Other recent International Immersion Programs sites include Belize and Vietnam, and the first IIP trip to Beijing occurred in March 2012. David Kurczewski ’13, a participant in the March trip, highlighted the importance of hands-on international experience in a recent Law School alumni magazine article: “as the world economy and the corresponding legal issues become increasingly global in nature, this trip was a valuable chance for aspiring lawyers to immerse ourselves in the modern practice of law.”

This past December, the students were hosted on the campus of Renmin University of China and attended weekday morning lecture-seminars taught at the Center in Beijing by Professor Ruoying Chen (University of Chicago LLM ’05, JSD ’10) of the Peking University Law School. The theme of the program was “Legal Aspects of China’s Economic Transition.” The students then spent afternoons visiting top international law firms, an environmental legal group, an arbitration firm, and a venture capital fund. A University of Chicago alumnus hosted a dinner for the students, and the group also enjoyed an afternoon of discussion with Peking University Law School students and Chinese alumni of the 2012 UChicago Summer School in Law and Economics. At the end of the program, the students had a free day to visit cultural sites around Beijing.
