MRSA each year is responsible for millions of human infections around the world and is responsible for at least 15,000 deaths annually in the United States.  The molecular epidemiology of MRSA is complex, with differences in predominant strain types in different regions of the world.  The epidemiology of MRSA has undergone a major shift since the mid-1990s, with the emergence of novel community-associated (CA-) MRSA strain types, which spread in the community in the absence of any health care exposure.  Also, since 2004, MRSA has been increasingly recognized as a problem in livestock.

International cooperation in research and surveillance of MRSA infections is essential in understanding the risks of international spread of virulent strains and developing methods to control MRSA.  There has been little international cooperation between Chinese and U.S. researchers related to Staphylococcus aureus generally or MRSA specifically.  To the best of our knowledge, this meeting would represent an important milestone in international dialogue on the subject of this very important antimicrobial-resistant pathogen.

MRSA(抗药性金黄色葡萄球菌)每年导致世界各地数百万人感染,在美国,每年至少15, 000人死于此感染。MRSA的分子流行病学十分复杂,在世界不同的地区主要菌株类型也是不同的。由于新型的社区型(CA-)MRSA菌株类型的出现,MRSA的流行病学自90年代中期发生了重大转变,其流传于民间,没有任何医疗曝光。此外,自2004年以来,MRSA已日益被认识到与家畜相关。

为理解毒株的国际传播风险和控制MRSA发展的方法,国际合作研究及监测MRSA的感染是十分重要的。中国和美国的研究人员在金黄色葡萄球菌、特别是MRSA领域之间的国际合作甚少。尽我们所知,本次会议将是就这个非常重要的抗菌性病原体议题展开国际对话的一个重要里程碑。
