Farewell Dinner for Autumn East Asian Civilization Students

On November 30th, the University of Chicago Center in Beijing hosted a farewell dinner for the autumn East Asian Civilization students. Students spent the quarter focusing on East Asian culture, history, politics and society. This year's program ends on December 4th.

Center in Beijing Follows the U.S. Election Returns

On Wednesday, November 9th, 2016, students, faculty, staff, alumni and other Beijing residents gathered at the UChicago Center in Beijing to watch live returns from the U.S. presidential election. This event closely followed Professor Rosenberg’s presentation on the U.S. election process, which focused on the differences between U.S. Democracy and what many expet from a trully representative democracy.

2016 Social Sciences Program: Quarter Recap

For the fourth year in a row, a group of undergraduate students participated in the UChicago Social Sciences Study Abroad Program based at The University of Chicago Center in Beijing. Over the Ten-Week Program, students learned about Chinese history, sociology and economics from University of Chicago Professors Dali Yang (Department of Political Science) and Victor Lima (Senior Lecturer in Economics and the College), as well as Renmin University Professor Tao Ran (UChicago Ph.D.; Professor of Economics, Renmin University of China). During their time in Beijing, the students also went on weekly excursions to sites around the city in order to enhance their in-classroom learning experience.

2016 Chicago in Beijing Chinese Language Students Arrive in Beijing

On June 12th, 30 students arrived for this year’s Chicago in Beijing Summer Chinese Language Program, held at the UChicago Center in Beijing. UChicago faculty member Youqin WANG, Director of the Chinese Language Program, as well as UChicago faculty member Fangpei CAI, returned to lead the program for its ninth year in Beijing and sixth year at the Center in Beijing. This highly intensive program allows students to complete an entire year’s worth of Chinese in one summer while earning UChicago credits.

A Comprehensive Summary of a Workshop is Published in the Chinese Journal “People‚Äôs Music”

On June 07, 2015, Judith T. Zeitlin, East Asian Languages & Civilizations and Theater & Performance Studies, Willliam R. Kenan, Jr. Professor at The University of Chicago, held a successful workshop on “Imagining the Sounds of the Early Modern Pipa: A Dialogue between History and Practice, Music and Materiality” at the Beijing Center, with YAO Chen, Associate Professor in Composition, Suzhou University of Music and LAN Weiwei, Associate Professor in Pipa Performance, Central Conservatory of Music. A comprehensive summary is published on Chinese Journal People’s Music.

Now accepting applications: Graduate Student Research Residencies

The Beijing Center invites graduate students to spend time at the Beijing Center while pursuing research in China. While many students choose to do research here during the summer, the Center can accommodate graduate students at any time throughout the year. The Center provides work space, visa assistance if needed, local information and some logistical support.
