Paul Sereno with Raptorex

In August of 2011, Paul Sereno posed for an impromptu photo with the Raptorex model his team assembled for the Center in Beijing.

Raptorax, a 2.6-meter long meat-eating dinosaur, lived 125 million years ago in what is now northeastern China.  Raptorex had evolved all of the key anatomical features of its famous descendant Tyrannosaurus, including a large head compared to its torso, tiny two-fingered forelimbs and lanky legs well-suited for pursuit of prey.  A cast of its brain from the inside of the skull shows that, like Tyrannosaurus, it also had an enlarged “smell brain” (olfactory bulbs).
