On November 9-10, 2018, University of Chicago Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Peking University Institute of Sports Medicine jointly organized the 2nd Annual International Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery Conference at the University of Chicago Center in Beijing. This conference continued the success of the first effort last year, drawing 120 doctors of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine from hospitals across the country.

From the University of Chicago, Dr. Sherwin Ho, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of Sports Medicine Fellowship and Dr. Lewis Shi, Associate Professor Orthopaedic Surgeon and Rehabilitation Medicine developed the program in collaboration with a group of doctors from Peking University Third Hospital’s Institute of Sports Medicine.

Peking University Institute of Sports Medicine, established in 1959, is the first institute of its kind in China, covering the full spectrum of sports medicine and integrating clinical care, education, research, and medical consultancy for national sports teams. It laid the groundwork for the development of sports medicine in China and remains the top hospital for clinical practice and research throughout the country.

For this conference, the chief organizer from Peking University was Dr. AO Yingfang, Director of the Institute and a renowned professor of sports medicine.

The day-and-a-half-long conference covered all major areas of sports medicine, from basic research to knee, shoulder, foot and ankle, and hip surgery. Each module covered one specialization, with doctors from both China and the U.S. contributing their expertise, followed by a panel discussion of specific surgical case studies.

Surgeons from the University of Chicago and Peking University Institute of Sports Medicine both hope to continue the conference while developing more in-depth collaboration opportunities with other institutions.
