On June 13-14, 2019, the 2nd Chicago-Tsinghua Young Faculty Forum On Law and Social Science, co-organized by the Coase-Sandor Institute for Law and Economics at the University of Chicago Law School and Tsinghua University School of Law, took place in Beijing.  The forum invited scholars from law schools in the Greater China area, as well as UChicago, to submit work-in-progress papers written in English, with 12 papers being selected by the organizers. During the one-and-a-half-day forum, each paper was given a 45-minute slot, which began with a brief, 15-minute presentation by the author, introducing the main argument of the paper. The presentation was then followed by group discussion and Q&A for another 30 minutes.

The purpose of the forum was to allow for open conversation with a free flow of ideas and wide participation, modeling a Chicago “round table” style workshop. To facilitate this format, there were no prepared comments by the discussants. All papers were distributed and read by all participants in advance, to enable rigorous and broad discussion.

As key organizers of the forum, Omri Ben-Shahar, Leo and Eileen Herzel Professor of Law and Kearney Director of the Coase-Sandor Institute for Law and Economics, University of Chicago Law School, and SHEN Weixing , Dean of the Tsinghua Law School, invited some of the top scholars in China and UChicago to serve as discussants.  They included Anthony Casey and William Hubbard from UChicago; XU Defeng, TANG Yingmao and CHEN Ruoying from Peking University; CUI Guobin, TANG Xin, LAO Dongyan, GAO Simin, and YU Xiaohong from Tsinghua University; WANG Yuyu from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics; LU Haitian from Hong Kong Polytechnic University; and CHANG Yun-chien from Academia Sinica.

Both UChicago and Tsinghua Law Schools look forward to the 3rd forum of its kind in summer 2020.  The University of Chicago Center in Beijing will continue to provide all necessary support for its success.
