The University of Chicago Booth School of Business Beijing Alumni Club organized a successful public event on June 29, 2019 at the University of Chicago Center in Beijing. Entitled Demystifying Film Sound and Music, the event was composed of talks by and conversations among film scholar Ling Zhang (UChicago PhD’16, currently assistant professor in cinema studies at SUNY Purchase College), composer Yao Chen (UChicago PhD’12, currently associate professor in music composition at Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing), and film sound designer Zhu Xiaojia (Beijing Film Academy graduate and currently a film producer based in Beijing). The event attracted a crowd of around 90 from different backgrounds, and inspired stimulating discussions about cinematic soundscape and the current situation and future potential of Chinese cinema.

The event provided Booth alumni with an opportunity to learn interesting aspects about film making, as well as broaden their perspectives in the arts. The event also allowed the UChicago Center in Beijing to fulfill its mission to support not only academic conferences and workshops, but also events aimed for public education and community building, thus bringing academia and the general audience closer together.
