On March 9, 2018, the first ever PhD admitted students’ session for Chinese students admitted into the Computer Science PhD program at University of Chicago was held at the Beijing Center. The session consisted of quick presentations about the University of Chicago school and its vision and dedication to learning, the Computer Science department, and the surrounding Chicagoland area.
Students were able to informally speak with Professor Andrew Chien, the William Eckhardt Professor from the University of Chicago. They were challenged with questions regarding their interests in computer science and the program, as well as a one-on-one session in which they were able to freely talk about their accomplishments and ask any questions regarding their fit with the program, and their envisioned future career path overall.
The students also toured the Beijing Center, which serves as a home base for the students and a resource for them to utilize to study at, do research at, when they are in their home country. This session hopes to set an example for future communications with the Chinese students, and give them a more personalized touch with the University of Chicago faculty and to bolster their understanding and interest in the University of Chicago.
Ji Yuan and Xueming Liang, the Beijing Center’s Deputy Directors also joined the session, welcoming the students, sharing their understanding of UChicago and the city of Chicago, as well as showcasing them the role of the Beijing Center in their future studies at UChicago.
