About the Conference / 会议简介
In 1999, Cambridge University Press published The Cambridge History of Ancient China: From the Origins of Civilization to 221 B.C., a volume which combined both traditional historical records and the most recent archaeological discoveries to produce a comprehensive history of the period beginning with China’s first written records in the Shang dynasty (c. 1200 B.C.) and extending through to the establishment of the Qin dynasty in 221 B.C. In the West, this volume has been regarded as a benchmark in the study of ancient China. In China, perhaps because it has never been translated into Chinese, the volume has taken on an almost mythical status, regularly hailed as a milestone in the Western study of China. 2019 marks the twentieth anniversary of the publication of the book. Not only have these twenty years brought ever more archaeological discoveries, but they have also brought greater sophistication in their treatment by the most recent generation of scholars in both the West and in China. This conference will bring together these scholars to evaluate both the book and the current state of the field.
1999年，剑桥大学出版社出版了《剑桥中国上古史：从文明的起源到公元前221年》，这本书集传统史料和最新考古发现于一体，全面介绍了中国的历史。此书从中国商代（约公元前1200年）的第一本文字记录开始，一直讲到公元前221年秦朝的建立。这本书在西方一直被视作研究中国古代历史的典范。在中国，也许是因为该书中译本至今未问世，这本书几乎被冠以神话般的地位，通常被誉为西方汉学研究的里程碑式作品。2019年是该书出版二十周年。在这二十年里，不仅考古发现越来越多，西方和中国的新一代学者的考古研究也日益精进。这些学者将在与会期间对此书及该领域的现状开展评估。
