北京智化寺位于今日东城区禄米仓胡同区内，从明正统九年（1444）建寺至今，虽经历不同历史时期，至今仍是国内保存最完整的明代佛寺之一。自1961年，智化寺被公布为第一批全国重点文物保护单位以来，经过几次整修工程，已经逐渐恢复寺院旧观，同时2011年开始数字信息采集，对于研究智化寺提供更清晰和详尽的材料。芝加哥大学东亚美术中心于2017年10月召开了“北京智化寺：重建历史与展望未来”的计划工作会，引起不少共鸣。今年以“智化寺与明清佛教寺院艺术文化”为题，我们希望承续工作会的目标，同时扩大历史语境，从中探索智化寺在明清寺院艺术文化版图中的地位。
此次会议是由芝加哥大学东亚艺术中心、浙江大学汉藏佛教艺术研究中心、清华大学建筑学院、芝加哥大学北京中心和北京文博交流馆在芝加哥大学北京中心联合举办。来自清华大学、浙江大学、芝加哥大学、波士顿大学等国内外16位学者从建筑、佛教、音乐等不同角度对智化寺历史文化进行了深入探讨，多所高校的师生及社会各界的专家学者和历史文化爱好者近200人参加了会议。
从3月9-10日召开的“智化寺与明清佛教寺院艺术文化”研讨会上得知，智化寺万佛阁藻井数据扫描已经完成，这将有力推进北京文博交流馆与纳尔逊博物馆对智化寺万佛阁藻井数字化展示的进程，为数字重建智化寺迈出了重要的一步。
The Zhihua Temple is located inside the Lumicang Hutong in the east of Beijing. Since its completion in the ninth year of the Zhengtong reign (1444), though evolving through different historical stages, the Zhihuasi is still one of the best-preserved Ming Buddhist temples in China. In 1961, the Zhihuasi was included in the first list of the national important cultural relics; since then the temple has undergone several renovations that gradually restored the temple to its original form. Since 2011, the various digital projects also have provided better and more detailed research materials. In Oct 2017, a workshop, with the title “Beijing Zhihuasi: A Historical Reconstruction and Future Visions,” was organized by the Center for the Art of East Asia at the University of Chicago. As the workshop drew a great deal of attention from scholars of various fields, we will host the “Zhihua Temple & Ming-Qing Buddhist Monastic Art and Culture” conference this year, hoping to continue the previous effort, while expanding the historical context to better locate the Zhihuasi’s position in the broader picture of the Ming-Qing Buddhist Monastic art and culture.
