The University of Chicago Center in Beijing remained open during the extended May holiday, using the time to host a series of admissions-related events organized by the Office of College Admissions. On Thursday, May 02, 2019, College Admissions Officer Michelle Trimpe took advantage of her time in Beijing by leading an information session for around 80 rising high school seniors and their parents. Trimpe introduced the undergraduate experience at the University of Chicago, from residential life to the UChicago Core curriculum and the academic advising system. She also provided an overview of the admissions process, and answered questions from students and parents.
Thursday’s student-facing event was followed by a two-day conference for high-school-based college counselors on May 4 and 5, 2019. 30 counselors from schools throughout China flew in for the program, which aimed to provide an inside perspective on the college admissions process, thus equipping counselors with knowledge to more effectively guide their students. Over the course of the conference, counselors participated in workshops on developing college counseling curriculum, understanding the role of recommendation letters, evaluating mock applications, and guiding student essay development. Trimpe led the sessions, in coordination with staff members from NYU Shanghai and EducationUSA.
The Center in Beijing was delighted to host such a productive and informative conference.
