On March 31, the Center in Beijing welcomed more than 170 admitted students and their parents for a half-day reception. The event was co-hosted by the Center in Beijing, the College Admissions Office and UChicago GRAD. Professor Dali Yang, the founding Faculty Director of the Center in Beijing, welcomed the students with a brief history of the University of Chicago and an introduction to the many aspects of student life at UChicago, including academics, campus life and the city of Chicago. The welcoming remarks were also given by Mr. Adam Sun (MBA ′98 ), the President of the UChicago Beijing Alumni Club and the Founding Partner of Ocean Pine Capital. Among the participants, around 40 were admitted students to the College and their parents. The rest of the attendees were admitted graduate students to graduate programs, such as the Master of Science in Computational Analysis & Public Policy (MS-CAPP) at the Harris School of Public Policy, the Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences (MAPSS), the Master in Computational Social Science (MCSS), and the Master of Arts Program in the Humanities (MAPH). There were also several admitted PhD students in different fields such as biology, chemistry, financial mathematics, statistics and social service administration.

On the evening of March 31, the Harris Beijing Chapter held their first event at the Center in Beijing. The Beijing Chapter started in early March this year and the kickoff mixer received around 30 alumni and admitted students of the Harris School of Public Policy. The mixer provided an excellent opportunity for alumni and admitted students to network and to learn more about the Beijing Chapter, including its members and the events they will be organizing.

On March 20, 20 students from the Law School, Harris School of Public Policy and Social Sciences Division visited the Center in Beijing to learn about the role and mission of the Center and to meet with UChicago alumni in China. And on March 22, 12 UChicago Lab Schools high school students who have been taking Chinese as their foreign language and their Chinese language teachers visited the Center in Beijing as part of their 9-day trip in China.

On March 9, 2018, the first ever PhD admitted students' session for Chinese students admitted into the Computer Science PhD program at University of Chicago was held at the Beijing Center. The session consisted of quick presentations about the University of Chicago school and its vision and dedication to learning, the Computer Science department, and the surrounding Chicagoland area.

On the evening of January 23, the University of Chicago Center in Beijing welcomed 20 newly admitted Harris School of Public Policy students and their parents with a reception. Ranjan Daniels, Associate Dean of Student Recruitment and Global Outreach at the Harris School of Public Policy, hosted the reception and had a lively exchange with students about what the University has to offer.

Throughout the four different student academic programs held in 2017, the University of Chicago Center in Beijing has served as a cultural gateway, helping UChicago students explore and experience China, as well as exposing local Beijing high school students to UChicago’s academic culture. The programs spanned the latter half of 2017, beginning in June with the Summer Chinese Language program and finishing in December with the East Asian Civilizations program.

From March 5 to August 3 this year, a group of 20 students from the Capital University of Economics and Business (CUEB) will be studying at the University of Chicago. The program they will be participating in is a Certificate Program in Organizational Management and Leadership Development, which is a two-quarter program offered by the Graham School to students at CUEB through a highly selective process. This is the second time the Graham School offers such a program for CUEB students, and most of the participating students have an academic training background in business and finance at CUEB.
