From October 31 to November 3, UChicago undergraduate students in the Beijing East Asian Civilizations study abroad program travelled to Wuhan, China, spending 4 days in this historic city. Based in Wuhan University, a sister university of UChicago, the group of 22 students ventured across the city, visiting archaeological sites and exploring night markets and food alleys.

Ranjan Daniels, Senior Associate Dean of Student Recruitment and Global Outreach at the Harris School of Public Policy, hosted the evening event as his final stop following his week-long visit to several universities in Beijing and Seoul, South Korea.

It was in October 2015, Shu-Yuan Xiao, Professor of Pathology at the University of Chicago Medicine organized his first Workshop on Pathologic Evaluation of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Associated Neoplasia with the support from the University of Chicago Center in Beijing. He never stopped there. In subsequent years, he collaborated with his Chinese counterparts at Peking University Health Science Center, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Wuhan University School of Medicine, and several top professional organizations in China on the 2nd and 3rd workshops and symposia. He was later invited to establish and be the founding director of the Wuhan University Center for Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics. This time, Dr. Xiao brought with him to Wuhan Dr. Daniel Arber, Chair of the UChicago Department of Pathology.

The Department of Art History is organizing a University of Chicago/Getty Traveling Seminar in Chinese Art History, funded by the Getty Foundation as part of its “Connecting Art History” initiative. Led and taught by Associate Professor of Art History, Wei-Cheng Lin, the traveling seminar, From Xi’an to Dunhuang: Following Buddhist Traces in Medieval China, will visit historical Buddhist sites along the Silk Road between the two ancient cities from July 21 – August 11, 2019.

The University of Chicago Center in Beijing successfully hosted the first University of Chicago/Getty Dissertation Workshop in Chinese Art History from June 18–30. Led by UChicago Professor of Art History Wu Hung, the workshop welcomed 10 Ph.D. candidates, each representing a different university from China or around the world, with classes being exclusively conducted at the Center in Beijing during the two weeks.

From June 24 to 26, the University of Chicago Center in Beijing launched into another exciting summer season by enthusiastically welcoming 30 undergraduate students to the Center’s Green Energy Conference as part of this year’s Wanxiang Amassador Fellows program. The Center in Beijing hosted this three-day conference to commence the 6-week Wanxiang Fellows program aimed at exposing students to sustainable energy initiatives in China. Following the conference, students will be visiting key sites in Hangzhou and Shanghai related to green energy development in China.

From May 20th to 24th, 2019, the 5th cohort of University of Chicago residents arrived at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) for a week-long clinical rotation. The three residents, Thomas Couri, Julia Sun, and Shawn Kothari respectively focused on gastroenterology and hepatology (liver diseases); rheumatology; and general medicine, oncology, cardiology during their time at this top hospital in China.

On the afternoon of Thursday, May 2, UChicago Professor and Nobel laureate James Heckman, whose groundbreaking work on the benefits of early childhood education has helped shaped the field, spoke to an audience from around the world—among them, high schoolers who a year ago had traveled to the very types of rural Chinese communities that Professor Heckman's work is focusing on. For those high schoolers—some of whom were Chinese nationals from Beijing—seeing those rural schools changed their understanding of the world.

On Saturday, April 20, a workshop on Hu Shih was held at the University of Chicago Center in Beijing in connection with the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press’s publication of the English version of the Hu Shih’s History of Chinese Thought. Mr. Hao WU, the book’s Chief Editor from Beijing Foreign Studies University, and his colleague, Lu YI, Editor at Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, planned and organized the event.
