Last week on July 14 and July 20, the Harris Alumni Chapters in Shanghai and Beijing each hosted a dinner in their respective cities to provide a warm send-off to the incoming students to the Harris School of Public Policy, before they attend classes this autumn. A mix of incoming students, alumni and current students attended each dinner, emphasizing the deep family-like connection within the global UChicago community
Hosting the dinner at MaiFresh in Beijing, Harris alumnus Lingu Zhong, MPP’17, welcomed 33 incoming students among the 55 people who attended. Mr. Zhong introduced what life would be like at Harris, from course schedules and academic life to the fun things to do around Chicago. Also in attendance, several other alumni and current students shared their experiences, emphasizing how attending Harris contributed to their personal development and career advancement. The incoming students then introduced themselves to their new community, and the night continued, as many excitedly discussed flights plans, housing arrangements, and class schedules.
The send-off dinner at The Press in Shanghai turned out to be a more close-knit affair, welcoming 24 participants, some of which had even traveled from neighboring cities such as Hangzhou and Nanjing to attend. Richard Han, MPP’17, welcomed the 17 incoming students, speaking about the mentor programs at Harris that connect students with alumni in different industries. The dinner event continued in a similar fashion as in Beijing, with many students and alumni creating friendly bonds and connections in anticipation of their start at the University of Chicago.
