Its first in-person event of 2020, the University of Chicago Center in Beijing successfully hosted a parent reception for incoming Harris School of Public Policy students on September 19. Abiding by University health and safety guidelines, the Center welcomed 16 guests to its space to listen to Harris staff speak on Zoom, along with 46 other online participants.

Currently based in Chicago, Shilin Liu, the Director of International Partnerships & Executive Education at Harris, kicked off the event by welcoming online and offline attendees. After showing a Harris welcome video, Ms. Liu shared the Zoom platform with Fanmei Xia, current Harris student and Harris Student Ambassador, and Harris alumna Mengxin Sun. All three presenters spoke about their student experiences at Harris and how UChicago Harris provided the necessary resources and support for success in and out of the classroom, as well as after graduation. Ranjan Daniels, the Senior Associate Dean of Student Recruitment and Global Outreach at Harris, concluded the online event, enthusiastically welcoming all parents and students to the Harris community.

Following the online event, Center in Beijing staff members Ji Yuan and Adrian Aldana led an offline Q&A session with in-person attendees, addressing student and parent concerns over online classes and Center in Beijing support for Beijing-based students.
